Are the Damon self-ligating braces more painful at first than conventional braces?

Submitted by admin on October 8, 2010

Are the Damon self-ligating braces more painful at first than conventional braces? I had braces as a child and remember that achy feeling. My teeth have shifted and I have been looking at the Damon braces.

Brace treatment has changed quite a bit since we were younger. Damon braces which are also known as self-ligating braces are definetly not any more painful than conventional fixed braces. Quite often, the discomfort is less as the wires are not held in so tightly. With Damon braces, the wire is held in place by the Damon bracket without the need for any elastics unlike conventional fixed braces. This allows the teeth to move freely right from the start with only light pressure on the teeth and therefore often less discomfort or less of that achy feeling that you remember when you first had orthodontic treatment.
