How invisible braces work?

Submitted by admin on January 1, 2010

Can you explain how invisible braces work?

There are two types of ‘invisible’ braces.

Lingual braces are fixed braces which are fitted on the inner surfaces of the teeth and are therefore ‘invisible, no-one will see you are wearing braces. Because they are fixed braces – like ‘train tracks’, we are able to move your teeth in the same way as conventional braces and carry out similar tooth movements and achieve excellent results. Incognito lingual braces are a type of lingual brace which are custom-made for you, only your brackets & wires will fit you. Your treatment is not only invisible but tailor-made.

Invisalign is another type of ‘invisible’ brace. It is not completely invisible as you are wearing a clear aligner but it is nearly transparent. The great advantage is that it is removable and no wires or brackets are involved. As you can take them out to eat & brush your teeth, it therefore does not affect your normal diet or oral hygiene habits. You wear your aligners full-time except for eating and tooth-brushing, and every 2 weeks, you wear the new aligner. Each aligner provides small incremental movements to straighten your teeth. However, the aligners are not appropriate in all cases as there are some limitations on the type of tooth movements achievable.
