Cleaning Invisalign Trays

Submitted by admin on September 13, 2016

Invisalign aligners are a convenient way to achieve your ideal smile. Less noticeable than traditional metal braces, Invisalign treatment offers patients a teeth-straightening option that does not require the aesthetic compromise. Moreover, aligners do not scrape or irritate the inside or the mouth. However, when not cared for properly, Invisalign trays can collect food particles and become odorous due to bacteria buildup. If the aligners begin to harbor harmful bacteria, it can result in a negative impact on overall oral hygiene. Fortunately, keeping your Invisalign trays clean does not take much more effort than brushing your teeth.

How to Clean Your Aligners

Cleaning your Invisalign trays is a simple and straightforward process and should be part of your regular oral hygiene practices. After every meal, it is important to brush your teeth and clean your aligners.

  1. Remove the Invisalign trays from your mouth before brushing your teeth.
  2. Brush and floss your teeth.
  3. Brush the trays, using lukewarm water and cleaning tablets (such as Retainer Brite). It is best to use a soft toothbrush. Non-abrasive toothpaste can be used as well, but it should be applied sparingly. Do not over scrub the trays.
  4. Rinse the trays thoroughly. Note, is very important not to use boiling water to clean the aligners. Excessively hot water can affect the shape of the trays, compromising the precision and effectiveness of the treatment.
  5. Reinsert the trays, making sure you have rinsed your mouth of all food particles.

Because Invisalign orthodontic treatment takes places in stages, new trays are given every couple of weeks. In general, your Invisalign trays should be durable and not discolor during those two weeks. Being conscientious about the daily care of you aligners will help keep them fresh and comfortable.
