How do braces work to straighten teeth?

Brackets are attached to each tooth individually and there is a wire which is held into each bracket by an elastic band. The brackets stay attached to the teeth until the end of treatment. At most visits the wire is changed – ‘the brace is tightened’. The first few wires which are inserted are light flexible wires and when they are tied into the brackets, they become deflected. These wires want to go back to their original shape, and as they move back into their original shape, they will move the teeth with them.
