Adult Orthodontics

Written by Dr. Chaw Su Kyi

It is traditionally thought that once we get to a certain age – we accept how our teeth look and meet.

Over the past five years there has been a significant increase in the number of patients aged over 45 years who are now considering orthodontic treatment. Within our practice 30% (a third) of our patients are over the age of 45, with 5% being over 60 years old and our oldest patient being 72 years of age. Dr Kyi has considerable experience in treating adult patients, having treated over 500 cases. Often adult orthodontics is more complex as this may be a second course of treatment due to relapse. Treating previously relapsed cases is always more technically demanding as one can only work with what has been ‘left with’ rather than a ‘blank canvas’ to achieve the best stable and healthy result.

One of the least talked-about aging processes is the aging of your teeth. All of us will get more wrinkles and grey hair – and we all know the ways to combat these areas – from botox to hair dye, there are so many ways.

But also our teeth will age with time. They move over time and the exact cause is not fully known, but a number of factors are thought to be involved. But it does unfortunately effect all of us to varying degrees. As we get older, our teeth will move more. If there is a small amount of crookedness or crowding – over the next 20 years this may become more crowded. If there are bite issues, the overbite may worsen over time. The extent of tooth movement varies in every individual.

We have many patients who are concerned that over time their teeth have moved and becoming more difficult to keep clean or unhappy about the appearance. It is often not just an aesthetic concern. A quote from the case below is of a lady in her fifties when she underwent brace treatment:”….. For me, orthodontic treatment was not a cosmetic procedure, but to relieve trauma to my lower gums and this has been 100%achieved with the added bonus of straight front teeth……”
