Can you be too old for braces?

Written by Dr. Chaw Su Kyi on February 2, 2010

My son is seventeen years old. He absolutely refused braces when he was younger but now he is ready. He has done his online research and is determined to get the Invisalign braces. Is there any problem with a boy his age getting this type of braces?

Age is never a problem with having brace treatment. The most important thing is to ensure the teeth and gums are healthy. Invisalign braces are great for patients who do not want to have something fixed in their mouth, as you can take the Invisalign aligners out for eating & brushing. They are also nearly invisible braces.

However, Invisalign is not suitable for all cases and your son should be assessed by an orthodontist first before deciding which brace option to have. It is important that this orthodontic assessment is carried out by a specialist orthodontist rather than your family dentist. But if his teeth are suitable, age is not an issue for Invisalign. Teenagers can be treated with Invisalign, but see your orthodontist first!
