Do children with braces all need to wear elastics to straighten their teeth?

Submitted by admin on February 3, 2010

Do children with braces all need to wear elastics to straighten their teeth? My daughter complains about the boys with braces who snap their elastics on her. She needs braces herself and wants braces that don’t require her to wear elastics. She is 12 years old.

Boys will be boys sometimes!, but if they’re not wearing their elastics, let your daughter know she will likely be finished with treatment before them! Not everyone needs to wear elastics. Elastics are worn to help close spaces if you’ve had teeth removed or to help correct the bite towards the end of your brace treatment. At 12 years old, I would recommend fixed braces rather than something removable like Invisalign braces. And with all fixed braces, it is quite likely that she may need to wear elastics for a short period of time. Elastics are not uncomfortable and very easy to put on. A lot easier to wear than to snap on people! (when answering this question, I took the term ‘elastics’, as the elastics we get our patients to wear which connects the upper brace to the lower brace)
