Why Should Your Child Have an Orthodontic Assessment?

Written by Dr. Chaw Su Kyi

As a Mum of three, I’m especially passionate about protecting children’s teeth, spurred on in the knowledge that tackling any issues early on – with the right treatment option at precisely the right time – can be a gamechanger, not just for their smile now but for the long-term health and strength of their teeth throughout their adult lives.

Making sure your children have healthy and strong teeth is a vital part of their development. Orthodontics is about more than just cosmetic – it’s about functionality too and could be giving your child the best opportunity for lifelong healthy teeth. Orthodontics focuses on improving the harmony of the mouth and jaws. It can help correct misaligned bites/overbite, making eating and caring for teeth and gums easier, and can correct harmful habits such as thumb sucking. Braces can also close gaps in teeth and straighten out over-crowded teeth giving a more aesthetically pleasing smile and reducing the risk of plaque and food getting trapped which can lead to gum disease and guide permanent teeth into a more favourable position.

What Our Patients Say

Specialist Orthodontist, Dr Kyi at West London Orthodontics

Why Choose Dr Kyi to Straighten Your Child’s Teeth?

Finding the right person to take you and your child through the journey of having braces is the first and most important step. Look for someone who specialises in orthodontics and who has experience working with the specific needs of children. Dr Kyi has been treating children for over a decade having treated over a thousand patients. Orthodontic treatment can be started on certain types of tooth problems even before all baby teeth have fallen out. In fact Dr Kyi recommends bringing your child for orthodontic assessment from age eight to check all the teeth are coming through correctly. Dr Kyi’s forward-thinking approach for early corrective treatment can prevent the need for more complex treatment later in their teens, giving your child the best opportunity for lifelong healthy teeth.

Orthodontic treatment can take from 6 months to around 24 months to complete. If your child is ready to consider treatment, we can arrange assessment and treatment without any delay or lengthy waiting lists. Some children who come to see us have been on lengthy waiting lists, and we have completed treatment even before they would have reached the top of their waiting list. We offer after-school appointments so there is no need to miss any lessons at their schools. Our Hammersmith office is very close walking distance to Latymer Upper School, Godolphin & Latymer School, St.Paul's Girls and St.Paul's Boys Schools, which a number of our patients attend and they can even just pop in during their lunch break.

FAQ

How long does it take to correct teeth with braces?

Treatment usually takes 12-18 months and a variety of brace appliances may be used to correct specific problems. This may involve removable braces, fixed metal or clear braces, Damon braces, Invisalign Teen or lingual Incognito brace treatment. Often fixed brace treatment is started when all the permanent teeth have erupted, but there are certain early treatments which may prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. In some cases, Dr Kyi will be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing using dentofacial orthopaedic treatment.
